Bloomberg news via Bloomberg.com reported this week that DISH Network’s infamously sharp CEO and Chairman Charlier Ergen has reached out to and contacted DirecTV’s CEO, Michael White, about a potential merger between the two satellite TV giants, the only real competitors in the that industry. Very few TV shows make it to a point to where they become their own cultural movement. HBO’s Game of Thrones has accomplished just that. Pulling in an already quite high three million viewers on its debut in 2011, the show has grown to the most downloaded (over six million people downloaded the Season 3 Finale) and one of the most watched on the planet. Even the POTUS, Barack Obama, has been noted as one of the shows followers, and according to the directors, he even gets sneak peek. Just announced this week in a report from DISH Network, customers of DISH Network can now view ESPNU, ESPNews, Disney East and ABC Family in high definition (HD) and 1080p and 720p programming. As part of a previously announced agreement between DISH and The Walt Disney Company to expand content, HD feeds of the four channels are available just in time for key college sporting events and new episodes of popular shows. Of course, this comes on the heels of the landmark over-the-top streaming deals that are in the works and being struck between the two mega corporations this quarter. A report this week quantified a growing trend in national subscriber media: more and more customers are leaving cable and joining satellite TV. The report specified that over 250,000 cable subscribers left their current provider and switched, while satellite television providers gained 40,000 customers in the switch. The moves follow long time trends: while customers have been leaving cable for satellite for years, the advent of over-the-top services seems to be increasing this momentum. Read more
