With DISH recently reporting 7% growth in revenues while net income declined 19% to $171 million. The decline in profits was driven by reductions in other income. If we look at the two important trends, pay-TV subscribers and ARPU (average monthly subscription fee), both were positive for the company. Dish added 40,000 subscribers during the first quarter and ARPU improved 5% as compared to the prior year period. Read more

Remember that Comcast customer service representative who just wouldn’t let Ryan Block cancel his service? That employee was in Comcast’s retention department, which is a customer’s last stop on their way out.
Retention specialists are trained to persuade a customer to stay, or at least not cancel all their lines of service. Read more

The NY Times is reporting that Rupert Murdoch has declined to purchase Time Warner, which would have been the largest media merger in the last decade — even bigger than the recent Comcast / Time Warner Cable merger that has been making headlines.
