May 20th, 2013

It’s getting warm and we’re all ready to take the outdoors. Whether you’re tailgating at the hottest concert or camping with the family, you can take the great entertainment and service of DISH Network with you with the Tailgater portable satellite system!

With Pay-As-You-Go TV, there is no contract required, so you pay only for the months you use. When the season is over, simply stop your service without penalty. All you need is the Tailgater and a compatible receiver. DISH Network customers with a 411, ViP 211, or ViP 211k receiver need only purchase the Tailgater antenna for $350. If you need the whole system, receiver and antenna, it’s only $499 and you’re ready to start enjoying great satellite television everywhere you go!

Once your receiver has been activated during the first startup, startups with the Tailgater in the future take less than fifteen minutes. No need to worry about pointing or adjusting, the Tailgater is fully automatic and will find a satellite signal on its own, all it needs is a clear view of the southern sky. The Tailgater is powered via coaxial cable from the DISH receiver, and the DISH receiver must be plugged into an AC outlet. You can use an AC/DC converter to plug the receiver into your vehicle’s DC power supply, typically a 12V outlet.

DirecTV Everywhere? Not So Much

May 3rd, 2013

DirecTV has made some additions to their “everywhere” service recently, including extending some basic features like DVR scheduling to their iPhone and Android apps. Features DISH customers have been enjoying with the Dish Remote Access app for years. So when DirecTV says “Everywhere”, what do they really mean? Do they mean you can go anywhere in the world with your iPhone, iPad, Android, tablet, laptop or other internet connected device and view your live DISH television service or DVR recordings, like you can with DISH and Sling’s TV Everywhere technology?

No. DirecTV’s “Everywhere” service allows you to control your DVR, view DVR and OnDemand content, and some live television when you’re out. For anything else you must be at home on the same internet connection as your DirecTV receiver. Seems a bit misleading to call it “Everywhere” then.

If you’re looking for true TV Everywhere service you’ll love the DISH Hopper with Sling. It allows you to easily access all of your DISH live television service, as well as view and manage your DVR, no matter where you are. That’s true TV Everywhere service!

3DTV on DISH

February 25th, 2013

What do you need to view DISH’s 3D content?

3D Television

3D on DISH works with modern 3D HDTVs. Some older 3D TVs may require additional hardware in order to view today’s 3D content, so be sure to ask the TV manufacturer.

3D Glasses

Depending on the 3D HDTV manufacturer, the glasses may have to be purchased separately from the TV. Consider purchasing more than one pair so that everyone in your home can enjoy the 3D experience.

3D Cables

High-speed HDMI cables (10.2 Gbps or higher) work just fine with the HDMI 3D pass-through technology found in 3D-capable HDTVs and Blu-ray players.

DISH 3D HD DVR

The ViP 922 HD DVR and Hopper whole-home HD DVR can both play 3D content.

That’s all you need to enjoy immersive and fascinating 3D content with DISH! Check out this page to see all of the great 3D titles currently playing on DISH!

External Hard Drive FAQs

February 11th, 2013

We’ve gotten a lot of feedback on our post about connecting an external hard drive to your DISH Network receiver. We’ve seen some great questions brought up in the comments and thought it’d be great to share them with everyone.

External Hard Drive FAQs

Do I need to leave my external hard drive powered on all the time when connected to my Dish DVR, or can I power it on only when I want to use it?
It does not need to be powered on at all times; however, it can take a few minutes to load the contents when it is first turned on.

I currently have a 622 receiver with an external hard drive. Would I be able to move the external hard drive to a 922 and not lose my recordings?
As long as both receivers are activated to the same account.

I’ve connected my external hard drive, but my receiver is giving me error message 860: “There is no multimedia device connected to the USB port”.
If you’ve had your external hard drive connected before the error message appeared, trying shutting the EHD down, unplugging, then performing a hard reset on your receiver. Once your receiver has powered on again, turn your hard drive back on and once fully on connect to the USB port again. If it’s still not being recognized it’s best to call DISH Tech Support at 800-333-3474 to troubleshoot your receiver.

If you are seeing this error message after the first time you connect your external hard drive, be sure to review the criteria and ensure your external hard drive meets them.

I’ve formatted and installed the software to use my external hard drive with my DISH receiver, but now I’d like to reformat it and use it with my computer.
Plugging the EHD into your computer should prompt for the EHD to be reformatted. If this isn’t happening it’s best to contact your EHD manufacturer for directions on how to format the EHD another way.

The USB port on the back of my 722 is reporting USB failure, and when I plug my external hard drive into the USB port on the front it’s not recognized. What can I do to recover my recordings?
To help with USB failure it’s best to call DISH Tech Support at 800-333-3474 to troubleshoot the issue. If they cannot resolve the USB issues so you can continue to use your external hard drive they will most likely replace your receiver. In that event you will be able to use your EHD with your new receiver. Just be sure not to try to connect the EHD to any other devices, such as your computer, as this will prompt a reformat.

Why does the external hard drive have to have its own power supply?
The EHD must have its own power supply because the USB ports on the DISH Network receivers do not provide power which is necessary for an EHD to read and write.

If you have any more questions about external hard drives and their use with DISH Network receivers, feel free to leave a comment and we’ll answer as soon as possible!

Consumer Electronics Associations Backs DISH in AutoHop Dispute

February 1st, 2013

DISH Network’s whole-home DVR, the Hopper, is an innovative and customer-oriented set-top box that aims to give customers what they want: more programming and less commercials. With the AutoHop feature, which automatically skips commercials in the pre-recorded PrimeTime Anytime content, they’ve given customers exactly what they wanted! Since its introduction though many networks have come out against DISH and their new technology, and CBS even went so far as to deny the Hopper it’s rightful place as CNET’s Best in Show for CES 2013 – CBS cited ongoing legal action and a “conflict” of interest in their obvious maneuver to deny the Hopper it’s rightful recognition.

On the 28th the Consumer Electronics Association put their weight behind DISH and filed with the courts the argument that the 1984 ruling of the Supreme Court in the Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc. case, known colloquially as the Betamax case, makes the AutoHop feature completely legal. In the landmark Universal Studios sued Sony, who had just introduced the Betamax VCR, for enabling copyright infringement with their recording devices. The Supreme Court ruled in 1984 that recording complete television shows for the purpose of watching later or skipping commercials is not copyright infringement and allowed under Fair Use laws.

Gary Shapiro, president of the CEA, has also been quoted as saying “Innovators have the right to innovate, and consumers have the right to enjoy the products of that innovation… It’s time to salute – not criticize – DISH for giving consumers the commercial-free choice they really want.”

PCMag.com Give DISH Hopper “Excellent” Editor Rating

January 21st, 2013

PCMag.com has reviewed and rated the DISH Hopper and have given it 4.5/5 stars with an editor rating of “Excellent!” The only cons they delivered for the DISH Hopper were that it doesn’t stream Netflix of Hulu Plus, but with PrimeTime Anytime and Blockbuster @Home streaming available with the Hopper, most customers report they don’t need either of those extra bills anymore! PCMag.com said in it’s bottom line review of the Hopper that it is “the best whole-home DVR and cable/satellite tuner experience we’ve seen yet.”

Editors also lauded the Hopper’s size, which is small considering it houses such impressive performance and massive 2TV hard drive. They also advised that “setting up multiple series recordings was easy”, and said they were able to set up recordings of several shows in minutes. Overall, the excellent design, ease of use, and customer-oriented features (such as the Remote Locate button) were highlighted and commended.

All four of the DISH Network DVR receivers reviewed by PCMag.com, which include the ViP 722, ViP 922 Sling-Loaded DVR, the Hopper, and the Joey, have received scores of 4.5/5 and the coveted “Editor’s Choice” badge. DISH Network offers the best DVR lineup and the most impressive technology in the industry! DirecTV’s DVR was scored only a 3/5, and knocked for having serious issues with dropped recordings and other shortcomings.

Best of CES 2013 Day 3: DISH Sling-Enabled Hopper

January 10th, 2013

The DISH Hopper and Joey boxes, a whole-home DVR system that was revealed at CES 2012, has returned to CES with a new capability to join the already incredible features: Sling capability.

You can also transfer recorded shows directly to an iPad using a separate, free Hopper Transfers app over Wi-Fi while you’re still at home; this way you can watch them later without an Internet connection.
The Dish Hopper with Sling also lets you “fling” photos, videos, and music from a mobile device to an HDTV. That’s similar to what the Slingbox 500 does, in part thanks to Sling Media’s upgraded firmware that the company launched this week.

Sling allows you to watch live and DVR recordings anywhere with a laptop, tablet, smartphone or other internet or 3G/4G connected devices. The new Hopper also offers built in Wi-Fi for easy network and Sling connection. It also boasts a new processor that allows it to run nearly three times faster than any other satellite receiver currently available in the US.

Another excellent new feature is the ability to transfer recorded shows directly to an iPad using the free Hopper Transfers app over your home Wi-Fi connection, allowing for viewing later even without an internet connection. Much like the Slingbox 500, the Hopper with Sling allows you to “fling” media such as photos, videos and music from a mobile device to your HDTV.

As if AutoHop, Primetime Anytime, a massive 2TB hard drive that allows for recording up to 2,000 hours of standard definition television, and the whole-home DVR capabilities of the Hopper wasn’t impressive enough, the new additions unveiled at CES 2013 make the Hopper rather irresistible.

Hopper Remote Locator

December 28th, 2012

We all hate losing the remote, but those elusive little devices often end up buried in couch cushions or under tables. Well, the search is over. With DISH’s Hopper, the most advanced set-top box on the market, a simple push of a button will locate your remote immediately.

On the front of your Hopper or Joey receiver there is a door. Pressing in on the door will make it come down and inside are the slot for your Smart Card and buttons for operating your receiver. As shown in the image above, the Locate Remote button is to the right of the select button, below the System Info and Jump buttons.

Simply pressing the Locate Remote button will cause the remote to flash and beep. Once you’ve found the remote, pressing any button will make the flashing and beeping stop.

Now that you won’t have to spend time hunting for your remote, you’ll have plenty more time to enjoy your superior service and entertainment from DISH!
