It’s getting warm and we’re all ready to take the outdoors. Whether you’re tailgating at the hottest concert or camping with the family, you can take the great entertainment and service of DISH Network with you with the Tailgater portable satellite system!
Once your receiver has been activated during the first startup, startups with the Tailgater in the future take less than fifteen minutes. No need to worry about pointing or adjusting, the Tailgater is fully automatic and will find a satellite signal on its own, all it needs is a clear view of the southern sky. The Tailgater is powered via coaxial cable from the DISH receiver, and the DISH receiver must be plugged into an AC outlet. You can use an AC/DC converter to plug the receiver into your vehicle’s DC power supply, typically a 12V outlet.

We’ve gotten a lot of feedback on our post about connecting an external hard drive to your DISH Network receiver. We’ve seen some great questions brought up in the comments and thought it’d be great to share them with everyone.
Do I need to leave my external hard drive powered on all the time when connected to my Dish DVR, or can I power it on only when I want to use it?
It does not need to be powered on at all times; however, it can take a few minutes to load the contents when it is first turned on.
I currently have a 622 receiver with an external hard drive. Would I be able to move the external hard drive to a 922 and not lose my recordings?
As long as both receivers are activated to the same account.
I’ve connected my external hard drive, but my receiver is giving me error message 860: “There is no multimedia device connected to the USB portâ€.
If you’ve had your external hard drive connected before the error message appeared, trying shutting the EHD down, unplugging, then performing a hard reset on your receiver. Once your receiver has powered on again, turn your hard drive back on and once fully on connect to the USB port again. If it’s still not being recognized it’s best to call DISH Tech Support at 800-333-3474 to troubleshoot your receiver.
If you are seeing this error message after the first time you connect your external hard drive, be sure to review the criteria and ensure your external hard drive meets them.
I’ve formatted and installed the software to use my external hard drive with my DISH receiver, but now I’d like to reformat it and use it with my computer.
Plugging the EHD into your computer should prompt for the EHD to be reformatted. If this isn’t happening it’s best to contact your EHD manufacturer for directions on how to format the EHD another way.
The USB port on the back of my 722 is reporting USB failure, and when I plug my external hard drive into the USB port on the front it’s not recognized. What can I do to recover my recordings?
To help with USB failure it’s best to call DISH Tech Support at 800-333-3474 to troubleshoot the issue. If they cannot resolve the USB issues so you can continue to use your external hard drive they will most likely replace your receiver. In that event you will be able to use your EHD with your new receiver. Just be sure not to try to connect the EHD to any other devices, such as your computer, as this will prompt a reformat.
Why does the external hard drive have to have its own power supply?
The EHD must have its own power supply because the USB ports on the DISH Network receivers do not provide power which is necessary for an EHD to read and write.
If you have any more questions about external hard drives and their use with DISH Network receivers, feel free to leave a comment and we’ll answer as soon as possible!

PCMag.com has reviewed and rated the DISH Hopper and have given it 4.5/5 stars with an editor rating of “Excellent!” The only cons they delivered for the DISH Hopper were that it doesn’t stream Netflix of Hulu Plus, but with PrimeTime Anytime and Blockbuster @Home streaming available with the Hopper, most customers report they don’t need either of those extra bills anymore! PCMag.com said in it’s bottom line review of the Hopper that it is “the best whole-home DVR and cable/satellite tuner experience we’ve seen yet.”
Editors also lauded the Hopper’s size, which is small considering it houses such impressive performance and massive 2TV hard drive. They also advised that “setting up multiple series recordings was easy”, and said they were able to set up recordings of several shows in minutes. Overall, the excellent design, ease of use, and customer-oriented features (such as the Remote Locate button) were highlighted and commended.

Did your receiver need to be replaced or did you upgrade to a newer one? Most likely you’ve received a new receiver in the mail, along with instructions on how to switch out your receiver and return the old one. DISH offers 24/7 tech support to assist you if you need it, but here are a few pointers that can help you to do it yourself!
If possible, place the replacement receiver on top of the old receiver and move the cords one at a time, from the spot on the told receiver to the exact same spot on the new receiver. If this isn’t possible, take a picture of the back of your receiver to use as reference when replacing the cords.
A jumble of cords behind your entertainment center can be quite daunting. Use this opportunity to get a handle on that tangle of cords. You can buy Velcro strips at most electronics store that come color coded and are specifically designed for organizing cords. Or you can use supplies you have at home, such as zip ties for holding cords and masking tap and Sharpie markers for color coding.
This will protect your receiver and other electronic devices.
There shouldn’t be any devices (such as DVD or Blu-ray players) on top of it. Refer to the packaging inserts for space requirements above and behind the receiver before installing in an entertainment center.
